Education and Awareness Activities
Education activities are always a highlight for BirdWatch Zambia. Our objective is to promote the study conservation and general interest in birds and their habitats, to achieve this, we are involved in various activities such as environmental education with pupils in schools outside and within our Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs) countrywide. We have a wide range of activities to help stimulate the pupils’ interest in birds and their habitats. Our target group in schools is the Nature/wildlife/Chongololo club, but is not limited to these. So far we have a total of 25 schools in our program and of these, 3 schools are new associates.
In 2019, we had educational talks with pupils in the Chisamba IBA, Lukanga IBA, Lochinvar IBA and many other schools in Lusaka. So far, from January 2019 to December 2019, we successfully talked to a total of 1290 pupils from 15 Schools on different environmental topics such as bird migration, the importance of wetlands, importance of wildlife and Vulture awareness. Other activities that we were involved in included; birds walks, commemoration of significant environmental days on our calendar all year round, termly schools newsletter, bird art competition, etc.
BWZ organized a schools’ art competition, which happened in June and July, 2019. The competition was one of the many other activities conducted in commemorating BWZ’s 50 years anniversary in conservation. The competition was rolled out to 22 schools in our program with 15 schools giving positive feedback and actively participating. There was an overwhelming response from pupils in each participating school. We recorded a total number of about 400 participants from the 15 schools. Each school had two and the overall winner came from Martin House.
2020, has started with a hype with over 930 pupils reached in the first quarter. These have participated in commemorating events like World Wetlands Day (2nd February) and World Wildlife day (3rd March). We have much more amazing activities planned out for the rest of the year. Let us know if you want BWZ to pilot education and awareness raising activities within your school or community.
BWZ is thankful to Elephant Charge, for funding all the environmental activities and to all of you for your support.
